National and International Recognition

In 1991, the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (UAG) achieved two key milestones. It introduced the Community College model in Mexico, called ÚNICO, a pioneering program offering practical technical training oriented toward the labor market. On its 56th anniversary, UAG gained full academic independence through Agreement 158, allowing it to issue its own degrees at all educational levels, further consolidating its autonomy and leadership in higher education.

International Recognition

In 1990, President George Bush recognized UAG, represented by Antonio Leaño Álvarez del Castillo, for graduating 7,500 American doctors, solidifying its international impact on medical education.

Lic. Antonio Leaño Álvarez del Castillo became the fourth rector of UAG and, by unanimous election of the University Council, assumed the presidency of the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, A.C.

In 1993, UAG launched its first master's program in computer science in collaboration with the University of Houston Clear Lake, integrating companies such as IBM and HP. This positioned its graduates in key roles within the technology industry. Thanks to the international prestige of the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, in 1998, it opened its first school in the United States, the International Language Center at San Antonio (ILCSA) in the state of Texas.
