The Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in the 1980s:
Innovation and Expansion
In 1985, UAG celebrated its 50th anniversary with great solemnity, solidifying its status as a prestigious educational institution committed to society. During this decade, the campus continued to grow with the construction of new buildings, reflecting its expansion and forward-thinking vision. In 1983, UAG formalized its International Medicine Program, which had already been welcoming American students for several years. Under the leadership of Dr. Néstor Velasco Pérez and with the guidance of Dr. Francisco Martínez Sandoval, this program strengthened the university's international presence and its recognition in the global medical education field.
During the 1980s, UAG also significantly expanded its network of international cooperation agreements, strengthening its global presence and providing students and faculty with opportunities for academic exchange and collaboration with institutions worldwide. Academic exchanges for both students and faculty were promoted, further enhancing the university's global approach.
The infrastructure continued to modernize with new facilities at Ciudad Universitaria, while projects such as the overpasses on Avenida Patria reflected the university's commitment to urban mobility. Social programs, medical brigades, and cultural and sports activities were promoted, with representative teams like the Tecos de la UAG gaining national recognition.
